What is
The Hero's Journey?
The Hero's Journey, more accurately known as the Monomyth, is a storytelling pattern identified by mythologist Joseph Campbell in his 1949 book The Hero with a Thousand Faces. After studying myths, legends, and stories from cultures around the world, Campbell recognized that many of them followed a remarkably similar path.
In this journey, the hero is called away from the familiar world, faces a series of challenges and transformations, gains a valuable gift or insight—known as the boon—and ultimately returns home changed. The return isn't just about what the hero has accomplished; it's about who they have become and how that transformation can benefit both themselves and the world around them.

Although Campbell's work focused on mythology,
the Hero's Journey can be seen throughout storytelling in countless forms. From classic fairy tales and ancient legends to modern books, television shows, and films, this pattern continues to shape the stories we tell. Whether it's Luke Skywalker, Moana, Harry Potter, or your favorite superhero, the Hero's Journey remains one of the most enduring story structures ever identified.

Meet
Joseph Campbell

Joseph Campbell (1904–1987) was an American mythologist, writer, and professor best known for identifying the Monomyth, now more commonly known as the Hero's Journey. Campbell devoted decades of his career to studying myths, legends, religions, and folklore from cultures around the world. He became fascinated by the striking similarities these stories shared and ultimately dedicated his life to sharing what he learned through his studies.
In 1949, Campbell published The Hero with a Thousand Faces, introducing his studies on hero's from around the world. His work went on to influence generations of writers, filmmakers, educators, and psychologists, with its impact being seen in many of today's most beloved stories.
Fun Fact: George Lucas reflects that Star Wars would not have been created without Joseph Campbell and The Hero with a Thousand Faces.
Beyond the Hero's Journey, Joseph Campbell is also known for the phrase "Follow your Bliss." Rather than encouraging people to chase comfort or happiness alone, Campbell believed that following one's deepest sense of purpose was often the key to creating a meaningful life.
